Many people arrive at hormone care after months or years of symptoms that have affected energy, mood, sleep, confidence, sex life, weight, strength, mental clarity, or general quality of life. This guide is written for prospective patients who want to understand the science without needing to read dozens of full academic papers before their first consultation.

The guide translates the scientific reading pack into plain, patient-facing language. It explains what the research may mean, what it does not prove, and which questions are worth discussing with a clinician. It is intentionally careful: hormone treatment can be life-changing for some patients, inappropriate for others, and unsafe if used without proper diagnosis and monitoring.

Our preferred wording: For women, we use the phrase regulated body-identical hormone therapy when referring to licensed 17-beta estradiol and micronised progesterone where clinically appropriate. This is different from unregulated compounded “bioidentical” products.

The aim is not to create a super-normal hormone level. The aim is to restore testosterone toward a physiological range when there is a genuine deficiency and when treatment is appropriate for the patient’s overall health.

These symptoms are not specific to testosterone deficiency. This is why proper diagnosis matters.

For women, hormone therapy is most often discussed around perimenopause and menopause. Symptoms can include hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disruption, mood changes, anxiety, brain fog, joint aches, vaginal dryness, urinary symptoms, reduced libido and changes in body composition. For some women, these symptoms are mild. For others, they seriously affect work, relationships, confidence and quality of life.

Modern menopause care is not simply about “taking hormones” or “avoiding hormones”. It is about matching the right treatment to the right woman, at the right time, using the right dose and route, with appropriate review.

What “regulated body-identical” means

In this guide, regulated body-identical hormone therapy means licensed medicines such as 17-beta estradiol and micronised progesterone, used where clinically appropriate. These hormones are described as body-identical because their molecular structure matches hormones naturally produced by the body. This does not mean they are risk-free, and it does not mean every woman should use them.

This is different from many compounded “bioidentical” hormone products, which may be individually mixed outside standard licensing systems. Compounded products can raise concerns about dose consistency, quality control, monitoring and evidence.

What a responsible menopause hormone assessment usually considers

  • Age, stage of menopause, and time since last menstrual period.
